Are you interested in joining a team working to protect Washington's waters? Our Water Quality Program is looking to hire a Watershed Unit Supervisor (WMS Band 1) in our Eastern Regional office in Spokane, WA. The Watershed Unit Supervisor manages the Eastern Regional Watershed Unit, which provides technical support, coordination, and oversight for accomplishing the program mission in 13 counties. The mission of the Water Quality Program is to protect and restore Washington's waters to sustain healthy watersheds and communities. Our work ensures that state waters support beneficial uses including recreational and business activities, supplies for clean drinking water, and the protection of fish, shellfish, wildlife, and public health.  

The Watershed Unit Supervisor manages and supports twelve professional level staff in the Eastern Regional Office, whose responsibilities include, developing and implementing water cleanup plans for impaired water bodies, conducting stormwater and other general permit inspections, compliance, and enforcement activities, preparing water quality certifications for licenses and permits, administering water quality grants and loans, and working with the public to address impacts to water quality.

The majority of this work will include:

  • Serving as the section contact for policy and program development for stormwater and general permit activities, development and implementation of Total Maximum Daily Loads and watershed cleanup plans, forest practice activities, water quality certifications, nonpoint source pollution management, and nonpoint source grants and loans.
  • Planning, leading, and organizing the work performed by the unit, and managing the unit budget.
  • Preparing unit goals and objectives, and supporting staff as they work toward these goals.


This position is open until filled, with an initial screening on May 1, 2018. In order to be considered for initial screening, please submit an application on or before April 30, 2018. The agency reserves the right to make an appointment any time after the initial screening date.


Required Qualifications:

A Bachelors of Science degree in environmental, physical, or natural science, engineering, planning, or closely related field


Five years of professional level work experience in environmental, physical, or natural science, engineering, planning, or closely related field.  Advanced degrees may substitute for part of the required work experience, on a year-for-year basis, up to two years maximum.

Desired Qualifications:

Experience in management and/or supervision

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:

Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license
